About our founder, Nadia McSheffrey.
Nadia started on the path of her yoga and meditation journey over 30 years ago, when she was first introduced to relaxation techniques by her Mathematics teacher to help calm her pre-GCSE exam nerves. The journey continued when she had a car accident and injured her back. She found that the physical aspect of yoga aided the healing process tremendously, more than any medical interventions she had tried. Since then, yoga and meditation have been an integral part of Nadia's life. During pregnancy, Nadia continued to use yoga and indeed meditation through Hypnobirthing. This enabled her to deliver her son Bodhi, at home with her husband, without any intervention. This confirmed to Nadia just how powerful yoga and meditation are and she was keen to share this with others, especially children.
Nadia is a qualified solicitor, former fashion stylist, certified Children's Yoga and Relaxation Teacher and a qualified Primary School Teacher with Secondary experience.
She first began introducing yoga and meditation elements into her Key Stage 2 lessons nearly 16 years ago and was astounded by the positive response from the children. They loved the sessions! She found that they were much calmer after taking part in yoga-style activities during a PE lesson or a short visualisation at the end of the school day. The children told Nadia that they were practising their yoga at home or meditating before they went to bed. This gave her the impetus to launch 'The Tranquil Treehouse®'. As a qualified teacher, she fully understands the needs and behaviour of children and the innumerable benefits that yoga, mindfulness and meditation offers them, particularly in the educational setting.
Nadia is also a former Literacy Coordinator and R.E. Coordinator, holding a Catholic Certificate of Religious Studies. She has written unique stories based on the adventures of Bobo, Pearl and the Tranquil Tree to develop the emotional wellbeing of children and to teach them crucial life skills. Nadia also uses various literary devices such as unusual stories, poems and songs to enhance the Tranquil Treehouse® sessions and to compliment the English curriculum. The Tranquil Treehouse® offers secular courses, however, we also offer a tailored course for faith schools which includes Christian meditation. More details can be found in our 'Education' section. Nadia trained in London with 'Calm for Kids' and is a member of the Yoga Alliance Professionals. She continues to develop her own personal journey of wellbeing and has completed numerous courses including transcendental meditation, nature meditation, neurobiology, neuroscience, somatic healing and mindfulness. Nadia is committed to her continued professional development to ensure that those she is working with, are receiving the best possible support.
The award-winning Tranquil Treehouse has now evolved into an emotional wellbeing educational establishment training teachers, school staff and working with parents and carers to support the young people in their care. The unique Tranquil Treehouse ethos fuses recent research in neurobiology and wellbeing techniques to create a programme to support the whole, developing child. Nadia has a regular parenting column in Luxe magazine and contributes frequently to different national media e.g. BBC Radio Newcastle. Currently, you will find her working privately with families, children and also in schools, nurseries and colleges around the north-east and beyond.
